Turtlecreek trustee, businessman Dan George dies at 55 Friday, February 29, 2008
Longtime Lebanon area businessman and Turtlecreek Twp. Trustee Dan George died Thursday at home. The owner of George Manufacturing in Lebanon had been battling cancer for several years. He was 55.
He’ll be greatly missed by the community, according to fellow trustee Jim VanDeGrift. His relationship with George goes back to when George was a student athlete at Lebanon High School, where VanDeGrift served as athletic director and coach and George later helped coach the cross country team.
“Dan was just an inspiration to most people,” VanDeGrift said. “He always had a smile on his face, and of course that laugh of his. He always looked to the bright side of life.
“As a trustee, he was instrumental in leading the township and was a driving force for the new (township administration) building.”
VanDeGrift added, “It’s just a shame that a young inspiring person, and aspiring businessman, was taken from us.”
In a Western Star profile last March of George’s battle with cancer, during which he was undergoing twice-weekly treatments at the Tisch Brain Tumor Center at Duke University in Durham, N.C., George said at a local fundraiser – which brought in $7,000 for the center- that he had been thinking a lot about heaven and the afterlife.
“I’m really not afraid of it,” he said then. “It’s just what God chose for me to do, and he’s in control.”
He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Gayl; his parents, Robert and Phyllis George of Lebanon; daughters Randi Hammiel and her husband Brian of Lebanon, Erin George of Mason and Jessie George of Lebanon; and sister Becky Gebhart of Lebanon. He was preceded in death by a brother, Randy George.
Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Lebanon United Methodist Church, Lebanon with services immediately following. Memorials are requested to the Preston Robert Tisch Brain Tumor Center c/o Duke University Medical Center, DUMC Box 3624, Durham, NC 27710. Arrangements were by Oswald-Hoskins Funeral Home, Lebanon.
